Large US network operator and data center provider Qwest announced opening of a new data center in the Washington, D.C., area on Monday. The new facility’s anchor client is a federal agency whose name or size of the data center floor leased Qwest declined to disclose.

The data center, housing 129,000 square feet of data center floor is Qwest’s 17th in the US and third in the Washington market. The company provides a variety of data center outsourcing services, including colocation, managed and cloud-based services.

A Qwest spokeswoman said the company bought the data center in December of 2009. The facility is designed to support 30 MW of power. It was unclear on Monday whether that much power was actually available to the site.

The company declined to disclose power densities it is able to support.

Also this week, Qwest released its financial results for the final quarter of 2009, reporting a 39 percent decline in net income year-over-year. The company’s fourth quarter income was $108 million, which was also a $28 million decline sequentially.

Qwest attributed most of the decline to lower revenues and increased interest expenses, as well as increased pension expenses and higher severance charges. The company’s revenue in the fourth quarter was about $3 billion, a 10 percent decline year-over-year.
