Spanish engineering firm AST Modular implemented a doubled stacked container deployment for an un-named customer in Sydney, Australia.
The system consists of a 40’ IT container and a 20’ ‘Free Cooling’ container placed on top.
The firm, which is the original equipment manufacturer for IBM’s Portable Modular Data Center, deployed the containers in April and said it measured a PUE of 1.19 and operated without chillers 92% of the time.
In a reference to the recent HP EcoPod
and APC’s Ecobreeze AST
says that while other container companies are bringing air side economised concepts to market it has already deployed air side cooled containers. “AST Modular had already implemented such a solution since 2009 in Thor Datacenter in Iceland” said AST CEO Henry Daunert.
The company claims its Natural Free Cooling system is an indirect airside economizer cooling solution that uses a passive air to air heat exchanger to cool the data center. In a statement it said: ‘A Smart control system maximizes the available hours of free cooling by monitoring more than 300 parameters. It is capable of choosing among 100% free cooling with temperatures below 19° C, partial economization with the use of adiabatic cooling, or mechanical cooling for temperatures approximately above 26° C (wet bulb temperature <20° C). As a result, the majority of the incoming energy can be devoted to run the mission critical hardware and applications.’
