Data center infrastructure vendor APC has launched a new line of power distribution units for data center equipment racks that meter power at each outlet and enable logging of power use over time, enabling more efficient energy management.
The company’s previous-generation PDUs metered power at the phase level, according to an APC news release. The new capability gives data center operators the ability to analyze power-use trends of each component, providing for more informed capacity planning in addition to more granular management capabilities.
The product includes software that visualizes power-use data it collects and provides the logging capability. Additionally, the new PDUs offer remote controls of each power outlet for powering it on or off without opening cabinets.
This capability can be used to avoid circuit overloads during power-recovery events, for example, or to avoid unauthorized use of individual outlets.
The new functionality adds to an existing set of features APC’s PDUs have had, including management through web, SNMP and telnet, as well as comprehensive overload monitoring and customizable alarms. The products have interactive LCD displays that provide connectivity and load-balancing guidance, as well as optional temperature and humidity data.
The new metered rack PDUs are now available worldwide.
