The interior of the new CoreSite data center expansion in Chicago
CoreSite (formerly CRG West) has completed 20,000 square feet of new space at the company’s Chicago data center at 427 South LaSalle Street, the company said today. The new space, located in the heart of the financial district, will accommodate demand for data center space in downtown Chicago. It expands the existing footprint at the LaSalle Street site, where CoreSite has about 30 existing data center and colocation customers.

Cisco Systems (CSCO) plans to build invest at least $184 million in a major data center in Allen, Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. The new facility is planned for a 34-acre site near North Central Expressway. Cisco’s plans call for a 140,000 square foot data center, which could eventually be expanded to 350,000 square feet. Construction is slated to begin early next year and take 18 to 24 months to complete.
The site in Allen is adjacent to two 138 kV (138,000 volt) transmission lines and an existing substation. The city’s marketing for the site includes plans for two 23 megawatt power feeds.
Local officials in Allen were jubilant. “It’s huge for us,” Jennifer Grimm. Director of Business Development with the Allen Economic Development Corp., told the Dallas News, which reported details of the project last night. “We’ve been working for several years to market sites up there for data centers.” The city will provide property tax abatements and road improvements.

LOCKPORT — As public hearings and final local approvals are expected today for the
Yahoo! data center project, the company submitted a revised building plan Monday, with fewer
buildings and slightly less square footage. A joint session of the Town Board and Planning Board heard Orest P. Ciolko of the Wendel
Duchscherer engineering firm present a 180,000-square-foot, six-structure plan to replace the
191,000-square-foot, 11-structure plan the boards previously saw.

Ciolko also said the complex, which is to be laid out northwest to southeast, is being
rotated about 10 degrees clockwise. "That has to do with the prevailing winds during the months we need cooling," Ciolko said.
Computer modeling by Yahoo!'s designers realigned the pods so the prevailing winds will blow directly into louvers on the sides of the buildings.

The huge Microsoft data center in Northlake, Illinois will open on July 20, the company said today.
Microsoft will open two new data centers in July, following through with a massive expansion of its data center capacity to support the company’s push into online services. The two new facilities in Dublin, Ireland and Chicago will add more than 1 million square feet oif space to the company’s data center network.
The Dublin, Ireland data center will go live this Wednesday, July 1, followed by the Chicago data center on July 20.
